About Mama Don’t Like Her

“Mama Don’t Like Her” brings two generations of music together in one playful, groove-heavy track. Carl Thorns combines the warm harmonies, finger snaps, upright bass and romantic charm of classic 1950s doo-wop with the dusty drums, punchy samples and rhythmic flow of 1990s boom-bap hip-hop.

The story follows a guy who has been warned from the very beginning: this girl means trouble. Mama sees it. Everyone sees it. He just doesn’t care.

Sweet doo-wop verses tell the story while the choruses suddenly switch into hard-hitting boom-bap rap, with the vocal group answering from the background. As the song develops, Mama may slowly begin to change her mind — right up until a certain Cadillac disappears.

Retro romance, hip-hop attitude and a story that never takes itself too seriously.
